A Paramecium bursaria was injured and started leaking its cell contents into the surrounding water. Scavenging Coleps sensed the injury and rushed over, forming a piranha-like swarm as they devour the damaged cell.
My goal is to inspire curiosity by imagining how microscopic creatures might look if we could see them in their natural habitats, and view them as amazing wildlife rather than "specimens" in a laboratory. Many of us are unsettled by the thought of invisible microscopic life forms all around us, so I try to balance the "ick factor" by showing that these creatures can be beautiful. The microscopic world is truly fantastic and offers a lot of inspiration for fantasy themes, which you will see in some of my more playful work like the hookah-smoking tardigrade inspired by the caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland.
