Artist's Description

Tardigrades are known for their ability to survive extreme conditions, including outer space. They have lived through all of Earth’s mass extinction events, so far. They mostly eat bacteria or plants, but some are also carnivores. They are about 300-500 micrometers long, so you need a microscope to see them. Tardigrades are common and can be found all around the world. It is especially easy to find them in moss, which we have plenty of here in Norway.

My goal is to inspire curiosity by imagining how microscopic creatures might look if we could see them in their natural habitats, and view them as amazing wildlife rather than "specimens" in a laboratory. Many of us are unsettled by the thought of invisible microscopic life forms all around us, so I try to balance the "ick factor" by showing that these creatures can be beautiful. The microscopic world is truly fantastic and offers a lot of inspiration for fantasy themes, which you will see in some of my more playful work like the hookah-smoking tardigrade inspired by the caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland.
