Testate amoebae are a kind of protozoa that can be very common in soil. This creature is similar to a snail, with a soft body protected by an outer shell. Amoebae move by forming “pseudopods” or false feet to push or pull themselves around. We often see testate amoebae in forest soils along with many fungal hyphae, but they can also be easy to find in compost or soils with plenty of organic material.
My goal is to inspire curiosity by imagining how microscopic creatures might look if we could see them in their natural habitats, and view them as amazing wildlife rather than "specimens" in a laboratory. Many of us are unsettled by the thought of invisible microscopic life forms all around us, so I try to balance the "ick factor" by showing that these creatures can be beautiful. The microscopic world is truly fantastic and offers a lot of inspiration for fantasy themes, which you will see in some of my more playful work like the hookah-smoking tardigrade inspired by the caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland.
